I… sometimes I don’t get my hometown at all

Things that enrage me about living here part 1.
For those who don’t know Spanish, this twitter message says “Homosexual marriage is nothing but crap, I hope all this nonsense gets sorted out soon”.
This is a tweet sent by a girl living in my dorm. She’s quite active on twitter and basically speaks her mind out all the time. She’s also studying law.
I don’t normally mind her since she normally says pretty dull stuff about her personal life and her studies on twitter but every now and then she’ll post something like this. She obviously doesn’t say out loud during dinner time etc because she’d get eaten alive by the other girls who actually do support gay marriage in my dowm (who aren’t many but they are all pretty hardcore supporters and really passionate about it, to put it some way).
Things like these are why living in my dorm sucks.
Why on earth would an 18 year old girl who’s grown up in our world mind who marries who? Is she gonna have to get married to another woman if gay marriage is allowed? I don’t think so. I don’t think it would affect her at all (in fact she said so the other day, someone mentioned gay marriage during lunch and she just said ‘I don’t like that but at least I’m not gonna have to marry another woman’).
Of course you’re not.
Gay marriage being allowed will only benefit people who want to get married to people of their same gender and won’t, in any case, be damaging to those who don’t intend to do so.
Then why, why does she mind? I asked her why, of course, because I’m curious about these things- ‘maybe she’ll give me a good reason that will make me re-consider my opinions’-, but she just replied with something like “Okay, okay, I take that back, let’s let gorillas marry fish, and Parrots marry Iguanas, and Lions marry Prawns, who cares if it’s not natural, let them do it”.
“Natural”.
I hate it when things come down to the use of the word “natural” to explain why someone’s against something like gay marriage. As a vet student and an animal freak (what can I say, I’ve always loved animals and wildlife and have read/seen/heard lots about it) I could tell her a million things proving that homosexuality is something that happens between animalls just as much as it does between people, but I decided no to light a fire here. Let’s keep things quiet.
Anyway— No, dear dorm girl, that’s not the kind of answer I was thinking I’d get.
I don’t think she’s stupid or anything, she has an opinion and I have mine and we don’t share the same political views at all, but… seriously?
What bothers me so much is not that she thinks like that, it’s that almost everyone I live with in this dorm thinks that way.
I mean honestly, I’m not into women and it’s not in my future plans to marry one -in fact it isn’t in my plans to get married at all- but why should I care what other women do with their life? Let them be happy and get married if that’s what they wanna do.
I think this same conversation has been going on for too long, and I just don’t understand why someone would be against gay marriage. I don’t understand it.
So if anyone would like helping me out on that one, my askbox is open and my mind is too.
